How Does Dental Insurance Work?
Dental insurance works like your health insurance, but maybe with more emphasis on prevention. Most plans (including Aetna dental insurance) work like a benefits plan, either completely covering or giving you big discounts on the services that you need to maintain a happy, healthy smile.
If you are visiting our office for a service that is completely covered (see “What does my insurance cover?” below), you are free to come and go without any money exchanging hands. But if you need a filling, root canal, or anything that isn’t completely covered, you will pay the portion that you owe out-of-pocket at the time you receive the service. You will be responsible for 100% of the portion of treatments that are not covered at all under your plan (cosmetic treatments usually do not receive discounts).
Why Is It Important to Visit an In-Network Dentist?
Visiting a dentist who is in-network with your plan is the best way to ensure you receive the full benefit of your care at the least hassle to you. A dentist who is in-network with your Aetna plan has come to an agreement with your provider to offer services at a previously determined rate, so you don’t have to pay big fees upfront and wait for a reimbursement that may not come for months and months.
What Does My Insurance Cover?
Most dental insurance plans completely cover your two preventive checkups and cleanings per year. That often includes a set of x-rays annually, and children may receive dental sealants and fluoride treatments, too. Most dental insurance plans will cover a significant portion of necessary restorative treatments, like fillings, root canals, or extractions.
How Can I Make the Most Out of My Plan?
To make the most out of your Aetna dental insurance plan, ensure that you are taking advantage of your two checkups and cleanings each year. We will send you reminders to ensure you’re attending these appointments. X-rays, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants may be covered, too. We will ensure that you receive all of the preventive care that is covered by your plan (and will also talk to you about anything that we think serves your dental health, regardless of your coverage).
In the years that you meet your deductible (or the amount you must pay before your dental insurance kicks in), you will want to ensure that you also meet your annual maximum to really get the most out of your coverage. We can talk to you about which treatments are covered and which ones would serve your dental health best.
